Foundation of Stress Analysis (ME330) - Undergraduate
2024, 2026 Fall
Course introduction: This course is designed to help students develop the ability to analyze the deformation of solids under various types of loading from both analytical and physical perspectives. The course focuses on the fundamental concepts of stress and deformation, as well as the formulation of governing equations using tensor notation and the linear theory of elasticity. Topics include stress analysis of beams under torsion and bending, column buckling, and plasticity.
Introduction to Thin Film Mechanics (ME491C, ME433) - Upper Level Undergraduate & Graduate
2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2023, 2024, 2025 Spring
Keywords: Thin Films Deposition, Microfabrication, Elementary Elasticity, Thin Films on Substrate, Stress Measurement, Growth Stresses, Nanoindentation, Micromechanical Testing, Micro/Nano-scale Mechanics
Course introduction: This course provides an introduction to mechanics-related topics involving stress, defect formation, and structural evolution in thin films. The processing, structure, and properties of thin films are discussed emphasizing current areas of scientific and technological interest. Furthermore, experimental techniques that were developed to measure mechanical properties of thin films are introduced.
Advanced Solid Mechanics (ME 530) - Graduate
2023 Spring (Prof. Gi-Dong Sim, Prof. Seunghwa Ryu, Prof. Jeong Whan Yoon)
2024 Spring (Prof. Gi-Dong Sim, Prof. Hansohl Cho, Prof. Jeong Whan Yoon)
2025 Spring (Prof. Gi-Dong Sim, Prof. Hansohl Cho)
Course introduction: This course provides the core of solid mechanics for graduate students. Vectors and tensors are treated and applied to introduce traction vectors and stress tensors in addition to deformations and strain measures. To treat the constitutive equations, the objectivity is explained and followed by discussion of various constitutive equations such as elasticity, viscoelasticity, elastic-plastic behavior and viscoplasticity. Plane problems - plane strain, plane stress and generalized plane stress - are covered and illustrated.

Keywords: Griffith Theory, Energy Release Rate, Fracture Energy, Crack-tip Field, Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics, J Integral, Elastoplastic Fracture Mechanics, Fracture Toughness Measurement, Mixed-mode Fracture
Course introduction: Fundamentals of linear elastic fracture mechanics are introduced, emphasizing singular nature of stress field at the tip. Energy release rate and J integral are studied together with fracture criteria applied to elastic-plastic fracture. Other topics such as fracture toughness measurement methods, crack bridging, and mixed-mode fracture are also discussed.
