Mechanics of materials
Presenting the unseen faces of many intriguing materials through our ongoing research works.
Material imaging and characterization
From a block of metal, down to a strand of hair and reaching towards the atomic level, we utilize a variety of imaging and characterization techniques to carefully look and study the unseen faces of materials invisible to our naked eyes. Find out more on our works... |
Additive manufactured (AM) Inconel 718 and 316L SS
The exceptional advantage of additively manufactured materials creates a new realm for prototyping with a great reduction in cost and time required in the production of complex and customized components. In particular, we align our interests in materials with suitable applications in industries with demand for replaceable parts of complex structures. Find our more on our works... |
NiMoW and NiCoCr alloys
These materials hold the top notch mechanical response and stability at extremely high and low temperatures respectively. Up to 1000 °C and down to 77 K, these two materials are the few that holds the possibility to benchmark other alloy systems in their respective operating temperature. It is our focus to continue investigating the reliability of their response for future system integrations in various industries. Find out more on our works... |
Shape memory alloys (SMAs)
Known as the smart metallic alloy capable of changing its shape in response to temperature and stress, they are widely used in sectors of medical, aerospace, sensors etc. and are expanding its applicability beyond the bulk and into the micro/ nanoscale industries. We focus to investigate the underlying mechanisms exhibited by this material at small-scale that distinct themselves from its bulk counterparts. Find out more on our works... |
Single element metals (gold, copper, aluminum, nickel) and aluminum alloys
In a great portion of our daily life we come across the commonly used single element metals, and utmost efforts have been made to understand their behaviors. The existing knowledge on these materials make them the best reference material to distinguish the extrinsic and intrinsic properties in multilayer micro/ nano-scale systems. An extensive effort is made to fabricate new and to extend existing bulk aluminum alloys into the regime of small-scales. Find out more on our works... |
